The Hansen

A historic market hall. Innovative hosts and a team that does not divide its guests into table numbers - these are the main ingredients for your visit to the Hansen. Breakfast, business, lunch, dinner or coffee in between.

Over 25 years of Mediterranean cuisine in a historical ambience

Restaurant Hansen, located in the basement of the Vienna Stock Exchange building, is known for its Mediterranean and international cuisine. It was opened on 16 April 1998 by Anita and Leo Doppler, who have been running the restaurant with great attention to detail and passion ever since.

The historic ambience of the restaurant, with its view of lush green plants, terracotta and a variety of decorative objects, creates a unique atmosphere. The Vienna Stock Exchange building on Schottenring with its brick-red façade, built between 1871 and 1877 by the Danish architect Theophil von Hansen, is one of the important monumental buildings on the world-famous Ringstrasse.

In the Börse Wien

One of the most magnificent buildings along Vienna's Ringstrasse, the former stock exchange building ("Börse Wien"), houses our restaurant in the light-flooded basement. The brick-red building in the style of historicism was designed by the famous architect Theophil von Hansen. It is also the reason for our name - and for the incomparable atmosphere that surrounds you here.

Breakfast

This is how exciting the day can start. With fresh juices, vitamin drinks and of course the classics made with eggs, ham or bacon.

Art at the Hansen

Walter Mussil

Concept

The photographs show glacier lagoons in Iceland and vanishing glacier tongues in the Alps, complemented by detailed shots of the melting glacier ice. In muted, light tones, ice, water, and rock are visible. Humans appear only as small figures, as observers amidst the vastness.

The detailed images provide insight into the finest structures of the ice: air bubbles and deposits that had been encased within it for centuries, sometimes millennia. With the rapid melting of the glaciers, they are gradually being released. What had been preserved in the ice for a long time is now dissolving within just a few decades.

„On thin ice“ refers to a state of uncertain equilibrium. In the knowledge of climate change, the tranquility of these landscapes takes on a disturbing dimension. What is captured in the image remains exposed to change in reality. Thus, the contemplation of these ice worlds also becomes a confrontation with time, transience, and our reliance on the seemingly permanent.

About the artist

Walter Mussil lives and works in Vienna.

His reduced and geometric visual language is usually expressed in oversized works.
